 Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy

As a child growing from a humble background, I have interacted with people from different walks of life. Based on my personal exposure to the less fortunate in the society over the years, the passion of helping incapacitated persons has not developed to be my hobby but also my desired career in life. Personally, I settled to be an occupational therapist based on its core objective of helping patients with a disability on how they can earn a living, take care of themselves and to be independent in their lives. Occupational therapy as a profession inspires me, especially its holistic approach to handling patients that I can cite as my personal principles and moral obligation to help the physically challenged in the society. Besides having the passion for helping the disabled, I also seek to build on my professional skills to enable me work collectively with the patients.

Due to personal passion and experience, occupational therapy will enhance my abilities to work in different parts of the country that are lagging behind in holistic care for those with disabilities. I have prior knowledge of helping persons with a disability based on my working experience and volunteering activities in multiple disciplines in helping those with disabilities or injuries. For instance, in the past, I have worked in mental health, rehabilitation and hand therapy specialties. Based on this rationale, I am applying to occupational therapy school to enhance my skills in a professional manner and share my experience in helping persons with disabilities.

 Decision-making Criteria
My decision –making ability has been concretized by the fact that I have gathered a wealth of experience from helping physically challenged people my working in different fields. Furthermore, my ability to make better decisions has been shaped by personal values, beliefs and passion in helping humanity.
My intense desire to offer help to the physically challenged partly stems from my strong religious conviction. I believe that all humans deserve to be treated with dignity regardless of their physical incapability or socioeconomic status. While working as a Certified Nursing Assistant, I helped the elderly with ambulatory difficulties. I realized that to help such elderly patients I will have to use a holistic approach in occupational therapy. Additionally, I worked with the dementia patient who had difficulties in communicating, and they could not perform basic functions such as eating and toileting. It was so challenging to me that I was obliged to seek alternative and more efficient ways to intervene for the patients with different kinds of disabilities

. To understand children with autism, I had worked with the psychology research team that helped me gain more knowledge and experience about autistic children. With the prior coding behavior knowledge, I will be able to enhance my skills through undertaking studies in occupational therapy school. The experiences, challenges of my previous work and volunteering have influenced my decision making; therefore, I am confident that securing a chance in the school of occupational therapy will help me sharpen my skills as a professional therapist.

Values and Beliefs
As a social being, my values are such as respect, quality, and equality among all humans with or without a disability. My beliefs are founded on religion through the heart of giving and helping less fortunate in the society. Throughout my entire life have the passion for helping persons with disabilities so that I can enhance their integrity, respect, equality and the quality of services they get. My values and beliefs have also influenced me to decide and pursue occupational therapy as a life long career to benefit humanity.
